The Pineal Gland: What's Known and What I Believe

The pineal gland fascinates me. It sits deep in the middle of the brain and is about the size of a grain of rice. Here’s what’s actually known, and then what I believe about it.

What’s known

It makes melatonin, which helps set your sleep cycle. That’s why light and darkness matter to it.

People have wondered about it for a long time. Descartes called it the principal seat of the soul in the 1600s, though that idea was dropped even by his own followers.

Calcium deposits there are common, so common that doctors use them as a landmark on x-rays. A small study of 11 cadavers found fluoride collects there too. That’s where the fluoride worry comes from, but that research didn’t show fluoride affecting the human pineal gland. I’m not telling anyone to drop fluoride toothpaste.

What I believe

This is the part you can’t check, so take it as mine.

I believe the pineal gland is connected to something bigger than sleep, and that the old traditions calling it a third eye were pointing at something real. I think most of us never get quiet enough to notice.

What I actually do with that

  • Sit in quiet. Meditate, with your attention resting between your eyebrows.
  • Get real light and real darkness. Sunlight during the day and a truly dark room at night. Even if you don’t share my beliefs, that’s good for your sleep.
  • Use sound. Some people meditate to 432 Hz or 528 Hz tones. There’s no proof they do anything special, but they can help you settle.
  • Stay with it. Small and regular beats big and rare.

I’ve left out the detoxes and clay cleanses you’ll see online. The FDA has warned about lead in at least one bentonite clay product, and nothing here is worth that risk.

These are beliefs, not medical advice.
